The Metallic Albatross *
Ms. Gabriela Manole Adoc, recently I noticed your presence in
some of major exhibitions at the Museum of Cotroceni, the Cultural Center of
Venice, after Rome and the House of Europe in Paris.

We are here today, before a
large retrospective, at the Parliament Palace in Bucharest. (1997) I want to ask
you a question: After a long and fruitful activity is there in your dreams
prodigious career that did not materialize? Is there art projects that have not
done?
Gabriela Manole Adoc.I can tell you that yes. For
example: people in the department of Botosani asked me to do a bust of the
historian Nicolae Iorga**, I started working after some time, because of the
lack of money, they stopped the implementation of the project; that, for example,
I regret, I was very committed to this idea, I was born myself at home, I lived
in Iasi where my father was a priest.
Talking about that, your children, your family is what you sometimes regret
having to leave the region of Moldova, which was more quiet, or, sometimes,
respect for cultural value was more now that 'Here, south of the country?
Frankly, I do not know what to say… in a sense
I can say that I was often very low, I needed, the city of Iasi stimulated me,
strengthened me, a short time ago I made a significant donation of my drawings
at the Museum of Iasi. It is true that the bottom is a less hostile environment
that here in Bucharest.
Let's talk a bit of plastic artists you like, you find a great value.
First , my former professors
Ion Irimescu**** and
Corneliu Baba***. They were my teachers, for a period in Iasi. It was a story…
I'll tell you.

My father is invested to build an Orthodox church in Iasi, in the place which
ports the name "Copou" and he approached Nicolae Iorga, the historian, in this
laborious activity. Iorga has its own pocket one million lei in 1937 to build
the church; therefore it is one of the builders of the church. The architecture
is signed by
Nicolae Ghika Budesti*****, in the style of churches built by
Stephen the Great.

On this occasion I knew Corneliu Baba, in 1939.
He painted the iconostasis, a painting of great beauty.
At the time I was a student, they watched my drawings and he encouraged me to
continue my work.
The war has begun, very hard years came, we were all refugees.
When we returned after the war, I entered the Fine Arts and this time I met
again Corneliu Baba. The Minister Petrovici who had committed at the time.
And it there was a very close liaison with a university professor, a friend of
my father. I can tell you that Baba was very popular in Iasi, the world regarded
as the most important painter; he had already painted "The players chess."
After he was transferred from the school, as "cosmopolitan and formalistic" was the
era of deny of the Stalinist era, an era that denied Aboriginal values. And
after he came to Bucharest… Voila history… it all to tell you what are the
painters who have marked my artistic career.
Speaking of disparage and "destructive time" ‘ 50s… likeness of the time and
certain attitudes nowadays, it does not offend you? It is a pity that the
political criteria replace a little bit of real positions of critical. This is a
moment when it is easier to destroy and deny?
I agree we live today, unfortunately, a time
disorder in which a false way of judging things had been established. In my
opinion, a new perception in the country's social life does not deny dot things
of value that were made over a hundred years.
Going back to your artistic career: I notice that there are artists who are
advancing in a specific area. But you've accepted the provocations of material , even provocative trends in sculpture ...
Me, I'm always adapted material and about! for
example when I did "The Albatross "in 1965, stainless steel work not turned in but
leaves shaped steel, welded inside, remember that it was the first work plastic
steel in our country.
You are known for your monumental work "Independence" for which you worked
with your husband, Gheorghe Adoc, who has signed the baso-reliefs.
In 1977 have been organized competitions for
seven monuments on the occasion of the commemoration of Independence (1877, the
independence of Romania) is the jury which was part Horia Flamandu who told us
winners.

Dear Madam in this new context characterized by struggles between opponents
and infighting, you think your colleagues are begining blame the fact
that you made important monuments for the history of Romanians?
I'm afraid , yes…
